it’s easy enough to mod. But no it is not open source.
You should definitely consider turning this into libre software, it'd speed up development and would be even better. Runs smoothly on GNU/Linux, BTW.
easy to mod? oh, imagine the workshop creations on steam if you go that way with the amount of awesomeness and chaos this game has combined with the crazy minds of modders.
