I think you can make an experiment and change player shooting to be instantanios damage for enemies that are on screen. Adjusting a speed of projectile can be a partial solution, but I would have changed it to the beam or heat from the engine. Right now it's very hard to spot the result of your shot, but then again, shooting is not the focus of this game.
