I wanted to leave the ending ambiguous because in my head, this story is an origin story or prequel to something bigger that I’ll probably never expand upon, and a fairytale that grandparents tell their grandkids with variations from family to family. I figured the best way to approach a loose sort of folklore/fireside story feel was to let the readers fill in blanks and come up with their own variations.
