Rebirth: From Chicken to Hero

by Lamonade

Hey there Lamonade, thanks for submitting a project to the 2022 IGMC. I'm Drifty and I was asked to judge your game in round one of the IGMC 2022 game jam. Here's some feedback about your project.

The opening to this game is really funny.

I love the mechanics of body jumping to get more powerful.

Good use of lighting on the maps, I enjoy the wide screen mapping and tileset used.

The overlay is nice and it doesn't take up too much real estate.

It's hard to tell the order that you're supposed to progress from weakest to strongest. I went from spider to man-eating plant, but I think that wasn't intended. I exploited web-attack-web-attack-web etc. To win the fight. If I were to attack spiders and bats at this point it would be a downgrade is power right?

All of the animated battlers look absolutely amazing!

I appreciate all the skills and customization you made to each of the creatures.

The weapons and armors kind of mess up the balance of the game. I feel like adding them was a mistake. If you remembered to go and buy the best armor (for 0 cost) and equip your characters then the game is very easy. If you didn't well, then it'll be very hard. It might of been a better idea to not even include them. It would have certainly made it easy to balance.

If you use any of the skills with Cynane (right at the end of the game) it will try to load 0-Princess_Yell.ogg, but that resource doesn't exist.

So it will crash the game.

You're able to beat him with basic attacks, in fact he's very very weak. But the bad thing here is that 0-Princess_Yell.ogg tries to load right when you are trying to possess the Hero... Which mean the game cannot be beaten, unless I modify it by adding a file.

However for this contest, I'm not allowed to do that. Even if I could, the game is encrypted so it wouldn't be an easy process.

It too bad that I'm unable to see the ending because of this game breaking bug, but I will say that your game is really really cool and I very much enjoyed it.

I hope that for your own sanity you playtest your next project to the very end.

Keep making games, I think you've got a knack for it and I look forward to see the next project that you work on.

Thanks for submitting a project to the IGMC 2022, catch you next time!

Thanks Drifty. Valuable feedback. And Thanks for the encouragement. Lots of ideas for me to extend this into a fuller game after the contest. As for bug, strange enough I playtested the final copy till the end but the sound bug didn't appeared.  Perhaps I should have tested it a few more times. Hmm... just realised the importance of beta testers. 😁

Another common issue I see is that games will work fine when you click the playtest button in-engine, but then encounter resource errors once it gets deployed. The best solution to this is to always playtest the deployed version before uploading it.
