Pros: Atmosphere and gloom 👍🤤, punchy gun sounds, found-footage effect.
Cons: Rudimentary level design, solid survival horror aesthetic but the balance feels off.
I'll elaborate on that last point. I like the theory behind the lack of HUD - no health/ammo counters IRL of course, so taking them out brings the player more into the game. However, with the enemies taking a fair few shots each to bring down, some sort of way of tracking how much ammo the player has left would be handy (I would mention the way Condemned: Criminal Origins handled it; that is, there is a dedicated "check ammo" button, although getting something like that to work in EFPSE might be tricky...)
(Although if somebody can figure that one out, I'd like to hear from them, that'd be awesome...! 👍😳)
What I'm saying is there's an argument for leaving the ammo counter on screen.
I think the shotgun should have definitely been more powerful, balanced by not having much ammo available for it. And if there's not enough ammo to defeat all the enemies, the levels ought to allow enough space to avoid at least some of them.
All this being said, I am talking about a jam game, so I wouldn't expect all the kinks to be ironed out in that time frame. If you're going to continue working on this post-jam, you've got a solid foundation to build from 👍
Also, don't let my 2/5 put you off; even Fantano gave Meshuggah a 6/10 once... 🤯
