you should just be able to download and install the updated version in your itch.io purchases in your account

here's the thing, when i originally bought it, i didn't have an account then. I made one recently so i could ask the question. So I assuming I would have to buy it again just to have the updated version.

No, you can either check your original purchase e-mail or you can go to https://itch.io/support and put your e-mail into "recover purchase"!
