Nah I got confused too. You can stop the bells once the monsters flash and turn around. Once their energy is up is when they disappear and you can't use them.
Yeah thats weird that does sound like a problem. You should be able to click and it'll go into a bell shape and ring, which turns away the monsters. But from the sounds of it, you're unable to do so. Wish I could help ya guy.
