No, your game gets places at the top of new releases when you make it public. That's why you need to make sure it's ready first.

My game has been public and accessible through direct link since the day   I  got notification from Itchio saying it was   published (21st February). Only yesterday it did showed up doing a search, but  way deep down on the newest releases, like it has been there already for +2 weeks, which was not the case, it has never been on top of the list, that's why I'm asking if there was a glitch.

That's because a game is considered new from the moment it's published, not the moment it's indexed. There's no glitch.

So if a game gets stuck on the review queue longer than usual (not dev's fault) you're in for bad luck, and window  of opportunity to show at top of newest games is gone for good. Thanks for the explanation.

Not necessarily. You can also try to make a devlog marked Major Update or Launch at the first opportunity. You should also advertise your game outside itch.io anyway. And the official social media accounts will often boost a good-looking game if you ping them.
