At the end of the day people will always feel "entitled" when they put money on the counter so to speak. On one hand you have the people who will support your work regardless of outcome and I'm sure you've seen many of them here, on Patreon, and discord. On the other hand you will have the people who support their own interests. These are the people who will support you only for what they can get out of it and are usually the first to turn on you whenever something doesn't go their way. In their minds they give you money so they should control what you do. You are unfortunately at a crossroads and there won't be a winner here.

Imo there is no crossroads. The only right answer is the decision the dev makes. It is his game at the end of the day and his way of making money too. Surely anyone making a game would want support and wouldn't complain about money. People need to be considerate.
