Cool idea, but if you have a game where 90% of it is material collecting, then its gonna benefit a lot from making the material collecting juicy, apart from just particles, you can animate some property of the hit object to convey destruction. For example, you can scale, rotate, flash, color and recoil the object. This video explains it in a very nice way:
