Trying to start a new game or new game + simply provides me with a black screen, and since I can't load an old save either, I can't do anything with the game now. Making a save and loading it after this happens doesn't change anything.

I've encountered this myself, and luckily, I worked around it.

When it happened to me, I was launching the game directly from the itch.io app.

When I opened the game folder directly and opened the game there, it worked as expected.

So try opening the .exe directly in the game files, if it still doesn't work, I'm sorry :<

That's not the game, it's the itch app itself. They updated it a few days ago and it's been buggy as hell since, so go to the game folders and launch from the exe file instead, it will work then.
