The graphics settings don't seem to be changing anything other than ambient occlusion. Everything looks (and runs) exactly the same whether quality and resolution are as high as possible or as low as possible. This is kind of a problem when I need to lower settings to get a game to run smoothly on my laptop. Is there a fix to this?

This game was made as a university project two years ago. As such, we were still learning about game development. Unfortunately one of the areas that did not get as much attention was graphical settings and optimization. The settings do affect some areas, however, they are not enough to really affect performance.
Rest assured, since then, we have learned a lot and have improved on this front.
