The nice options really arent lies, youre choosing which option is the main character speaking his mind. Just because there is a bad option doesnt mean that is the "real" one and the nice one is him changing his personality. Even when choosing the nice options it becomes clear from the dialogue he's still speaking his mind and embarrassed about it, its just not purposefully pushing his own lifelong burdens onto someone he just met (which is objectively not a great thing to do). The way i read through it considering he had already had his window open for months and committed to a daily routine by the time you meet Button he is already a changed man and just doesnt realize it
