Sorry to hear you had trouble with the first door! Would you mind sharing which version your played on (mac or windows) to help us diagnose the problem?
I was playing on the Windows version. I spoke to the suspicious guy who gave me the new mode and then I went to the door and just tried clicking everything and cycling through the two modes. I hope I didn't miss an instruction :P. Best of luck to ya!
