It seems like you incorporated the theme with the signs pointing in the weird directions. Perhaps you could have done more with breaking the rules of metroidvania games; like spikes being health pickups and chests being enemies

I also didn't really know were I needed to go and then got stuck in the area pictured below. The guy can't jump high enough to get out of there.
