Spatial is intended to be a looser variant of "grid-based": the combat takes place in some space with relevant geometry, but it can be continuous. Text adventures, JRPG-style, card battle combat typically violates this. There are some games which are quite close to traditional roguelike but not strictly grid-based (e.g., billiards roguelikes, Rootin' Tootin' Lootin' Shootin').
