I LOVE this. Such a fun mechanic, that I think you could do a lot with. I was instantly taken back to puzzles similar to this in games like Paper Mario, and Sonic Adventure.
Taking this mechanic and highlighting is as the core element of gameplay, I think is genius.
Also, I love the setting - it reminds me of games like Portal, The Talos Principle, and others.
