Awesome game :D
Viewing post in Finding Inspiration (prototype) comments
Thanks, but I see no recent downloads of this game in my stats, and there is no web version. I also noticed you serial-commented on several on my games with quite generic feedback, giving me the impression that you are giving nice comments for the sake of it - maybe with the intention of helping devs get some visibility.
However, I’d rather you actually played each game thoroughly, even if it means spending more time on one and commenting on fewer games in the end, so I can get more qualitative feedback I can use to improve the game, or my other future projects.
Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Looks like you’ve been adding more comments on my games and even some YouTube videos, and in fact, on Unsatisfied, you gave positive feedback on a specific line of text in the game that you liked, which was great!
But for the others, you ignored my suggestion and kept posting very generic one-line comments, which again made me wondered if you actually played/watched every video… It’s not a problem that various people come and post short comments, but when the same person serial-comments with one or two words of every work of the same author (and that person is not a close friend), it gets a little weird.
Honestly it’s not critical if you can’t find the right words to express your thoughts - but if you only want to post quantitative feedback to say that you like or didn’t like something, but don’t know better words for that, rating is just fine. On itch.io, there is the rating button at the top-right with a star icon, where you can give a rating and commenting is optional. On YouTube, it’s Thumb up (or Thumb down if you didn’t like it). These sounds like better options when you want to support a work by helping it stand out on the website thanks to the promotion algorithm, but you don’t have any qualitative feedback to add. This also reduces my notifications which can add to my mental workload (I don’t receive notifications for ratings on itch - I just check the average ratings of a given game when I want to).
Again, I enjoy seeing new people give me one-liner like “That game was cool!” but when it’s the same person every time and they never said they were dissatisfied with anything even in my worst entries, the satisfaction starts wearing out and the value of the congratulations starts dropping. So, better use rating / thumb up in that case.
Now, if you really want to learn how to write good qualitative reviews, have a break from posting comments and look at how other people do it. For instance, try to read the top Steam reviews of various games, especially those of medium and big length. There may be very deep and detailed. You don’t have to go that far but if you really like the games you play, you can probably find at least one or two sentences to write about them.
Of course, don’t go the opposite way either: writing paragraphs for the sake of writing paragraphs. If you don’t know what to say, a few lines, or even a pure rating without text is fine.
Ok!
Also, I kinda agree from what you said in the 3rd paragraph. Usually on YouTube, I comment & give a lot of impressions on someone's videos & posts with one-liner, it's just that it's a positive impression when I leave a "Nice" one-liner comment.
And yeah, I've done the rating thing before on itch.io. You're basically right about the rating the game with no text. I've seen some people rated 5 stars when they enjoyed the game on my feed, & that shows how people enjoyed the game with 100%. I've also done rating on your game "Unsatisfied" with no text a long time ago too as well.
Also, my apologies from what you said in the 2nd paragraph. Played/watched/skipped every video & commenting, I always do that on YouTube... Sometimes when I got the notification on YouTube, I just comment the one-line comment to be the first one to comment the fastest way. Like if you sort the comments, tap "Newest" on the comments section, & you'll see the comments in chronological order with the latest ones first. Lots of people do that TBH.
I agree from all of what you said on the 5th, & the 6th paragraph as well. The parts that you mentioned "Top Steam Reviews of various games" & "Very deep & detailed" I'll try to do that soon hopefully, & on 6th paragraph too. Thanks for the facts though :)
And of course, I'll try to not skip & serial-comment your videos next time. I'll try to do better of adding feedback on one of your videos.
And one more thing, I'll tell you about the comments on your channel if you don't mind.
So on YouTube in the comments section, there's a heart icon of where you can get to heart someone's comments (If you liked it). I mostly do that all the time, & other people too. And there's usually a thumbs up icon if you liked somebody's comment, or thumbs down. Or if you don't want to, it's fine.
Also, my comment won't show up on your channel because you clicked on "Hide user from channel" on my comment. That means that my comments won't show up on your channel on public, it's only visible by me. For example:
- While not on Incognito mode on YouTube:
- While on Incognito on YouTube:
To make me comment on your videos, on mobile, you can go to my channel & tap 3 dots on the top right corner. Then, tap "Unhide user from my channel". And then, my comment should show up on my channel (If you unhidden me from your channel).
And now, if you don't wanna see my comment about serial-commenting on your video or stuff like that, you can tap the 3 dots on my comment & tap "Remove" (or on the computer version, either one).
Thank you for your reply, this time it was very detailed and I could understand your intentions and way of thought better. If you’re already using thumb up and ratings then that’s alright!
Then yes, your one-liners make sense, just make sure give more details when you can, so I can feel you’re really giving a personal feedback.
Also, don’t feel obliged to comment first on a video if you have nothing special to say. Some people just comment “first!” but it doesn’t really help the creators (obviously “nice game” is already better because it gives some evaluation, but you have to mean it). Nowadays comments are often sorted by popularity (on YouTube, not itch though) so it doesn’t matter that much, but it would still show if you only have 2-3 comments on your videos (as in my case).
As you noticed I hid your comments on YouTube until you read my message. I’ve unhidden you now so your new comments will be visible. Or you can just thumb up as you said.
Reversely, I will also think about using thumb up on users’ comments with thumb up, so you know your feedback is appreciated.
