This sounds reasonable. I understand why people here would want a steam key for buying the game early (as did I), because it feels like we got "punished" for supporting the game early with no expectations of a steam release.
But on the other hand, it's really not that much money and it's basically a solo dev project. He could have left the itch.io version to rot but he's working on implementing the new (possible) features into this version too.

From what I understand: The itch.io version will get updated with the game's new items, but there will be no steam features such as achievements, leaderboard, and multiplayer. I'm no gamedev but it makes sense that these steam features can't be implemented into the itch.io version.

What I'm saying is: just support the dev he makes cool games. Cut him some slack, don't break his balls over a few bucks.

The "don't break his balls over a few bucks" could also applied the other way around. A free steam key for early supporters (like other devs here do) would gain a lot of respect or a discount would be reasonable but getting nothing for supporting early is just disrepectful. Its also bad long term for him, people are going to think twice about supporting early when he releases new projects.

if he gives out keys, lots of them are just gonna get re sold on key sites, and steam puts limits on how many keys devs can give out anyways. also its not typical to expect a key for a different platform when you bought it on itch. itch isn't like kickstarter. when buying a game you almost always only get the game on the platform you bought it for

It would make far more sense to just give us keys. Many other Itch devs whose games got ported to steam gave free keys to those who bought it. It’s also a much better move on his part since people will want to support him more if they know that he’s a reasonable guy.
