The issue of deciding what the player character says, and taking that small level of control away is something that games have always struggled with. Mass Effect is a good example of this where it offers you the choice of self inserting or playing character, but at moments doing or saying something you or the character wouldn't specifically want.

For a visual novel I do believe we do offer a much higher sense of adjacency than the majority of VNs out there.
