We've been working on some of the things that we weren't able to get right during the jam. We're working to make it easier to play by allowing key bindings as well as CPU players.
Dying currently teleports you to the next 'checkpoint' (theres like 8 invisible barriers to mark lap completion and respawn locations). We never considered how random the respawn location feels. Will look in to making it less teleporty.
