Personally I found, that the game would be too short and unchallenging if you had the option to kill every pusher. And the title refers to the laser which can kill You but also is your wincondition.
There is a short gray beam where the laser will be, before it is finally shot, I guess this isn't enough indication.
I didn't prioritized the buttons, so that's my bad there.
