Code Cleanup (and more)

Hi again!

While re-doing my game I've decided to clean my code a bit since it's a mess.  Example:

Before

After

I was also making a website about game development, 3D, etc. but i can't talk about it here. If you're interested you could follow me on YT(link in bio).

I'm afraid I won't be able to update here soon so see you next month! Thanks for the support

Hi! Sorry to keep you waiting, I had a few problems with my PC and lost almost half of the game. I'll update again ASAP.

Hello! I'm a self-taught game developer and a few months ago I released my first game.

https://call-me-elena.itch.io/astroball

I'll make a Youtube video on what I learned by making and publishing it 'cause I love sharing knowledge and experience but I had 0 downlands and 0 reviews. I'm looking for general feedback.

Thank you so much!

Level Design Update

Lights!

Art Update

The library. (Seen from the outside)

Art/Ideas Update

I thought hard about this new level. I was thinking of setting it in a modern  library. Okay, that sounds weird, but it'll make sense to those who will buy this game.

I spent too much time thinking so, for now, I just made floor tiles :')

Would you rather pay for a game or have it for free but with ads? This question has been on my mind since I released a game a few months ago but didn't earn anything from it (it's 1$). It was my first game so I'm not that surprised, but now that I'm working on another game I'm a little worried about selling a game again. I hate ADS in games but I also hate earning 0$ from something I put so much effort into.

If you're a gamer you could answer the question at the beginning of this post.

If you're a developer: could you talk a little about your experiences?

It will be interesting to know more about this. Thank you for your time.

Art Update:

Just a key. Or, maybe, the main object of level 2.

Update

I understood how save systems work. However, I think I'll code it when I'll finish the game, I still have things to add to it that I haven't done, yet. Tomorrow I'll start uploading updates about the second level.

Save System Update

It's been a while since I don't post on this devlog. I'm trying to save by using checkpoints, I've tried a few systems and it seems to work in editor mode, I'll try shipping and I'll update again in a few days. Oh man, save systems are the most boring and annoying part of making a game.

By the way, this is the checkpoint:

Yeah, I want to keep everything simple.

No, thanks, I make music myself

SaveSystem

It works.

Level Update

The level 1 is completed! (not really, I still have to make the music, the save system, the story... but I'll leave these details for later).

Like always, I'll leave a video and a few screenshots.

I thought you needed help with game currency bugs, not this. Sorry, I can't help you with this.

I'll help you with any issue if I can, just be clearer about the problem

Np, but how can I help you?

The game art is amazing. Keep it up!

Art Update

Fences looked kind of weird so I improved them.

Level Update

Btw, the first level is almost finished: I just need to place some actors, fix some things and add a timer WBP. I'll update this devlog again ASAP.

Art Update

Black and white fountain (it's a portal)

Bugs :/

I have to put every tilemap in the same level 'cause it's the only way to make teleport work :[

I just created the enemy's spawner. It's simple but I like it.

The video is on Insta.

Enemy/shooting system Update

Finally, the enemy/shooting systems work pretty well. Here is the video and two random screenshots:

Now, I have to work on effects, the enemy spawner, and other things to finish building the first level.

Art Update:

Sickle. (Peasant's weapon)

Enemy Update

I thought  that making all the enemies the same would be very boring (like moving the same way or with the same characteristics). So for the first enemy I made a paper character who follows the player but almost never faces him (wonder why? you'll have to wait for the story to know!). He doesn't attack, yet. Here's a video.

I hope you don't mind me not posting any replies on this devlog for a few days! I'm trying to make and improve all the enemy and shooting systems. At the moment I'm creating a few more flipbooks.

Level Design Update:

I posted a video from the player's point of view (on Insta).

Art Update:

I drew this fountain.

I really like it tbh.

Thank you!

General Update

Level Design: I almost finished the first level.

Art: I drew other houses and improved fences.

Coding: I have to complete the shooting system of the player + make various systems for the enemies.

It looks so cool

What kind of tips? Game art, game design, where to start a devlog, etc.(?)

Hello! I'm Elena and I'm a self-taught game developer. I use Unreal Engine to make my games. I've finished one game and I'm making one called 'nameless warrior' (My devlog is in the community page). I love creating games with a story and my dream is to be a successful game developer and writer. I have a few social media accounts and they are linked on my profile

I've made the 'died' + respawn system. Say hi to this gentleman! (He is the first enemy you'll face but he can't move, yet)

Health system + Health Widget DONE

I'm currently working on the 'died' system, enemies and levels

I've just fixed some bugs related to the shooting system. I'm almost done coding the health system too, I just need to make the progress bar widget.  And...of course, the 'died' function and its flipbook. I'll update again soon.

I'm working on the shooting system at the moment.  Here is a video.

It works pretty well but it still needs to be improved. Before perfecting the shooting system I'll make the health system and I'll start creating the enemies, just to make sure everything works the way I want to. The first enemy I will design will be a peasant.

Grazie!

First fifth of the main map DONE

Now, I'm working on the shooting system. This knife will be one of the weapons:

UPDATE:

He can now walk, it's my first top-down game so I faced some bugs but now everything seems working. Instagram Video

I'm now working on:

  • the shooting system (coding, blueprint)
  • drawing some other houses (decorations, pixel art)
  • the main tilemap

I won't tell the story yet, but just know that you will experience both a historic and a sci-fi game playing this. Comment if you are interested!

He is the knight we're talking about:

I've just started this project and made
