How about adding a well that can be build on higher floor? To get the water from sea to different floors without having to go downstairs. :) or maybe aquaducts or water tubes - that would be a nice use for the metal scrap :)
oh but maybe some fruits could have healing effects? or cure poisoning, if that mechanics is added?
