It looks good so far. Unfortunately, the game crashes if you select a word that is not in the dictionary. Regularly, I will enter Xs for unknown characters. If I accidentally hit return, the game correctly says “word not found”. It also crashes with an error -35 and says it cannot find the file and crashes to the desktop.
Hugo,
Yes, the fallback method does work for me. However, I would be interested in what PDF reader you used that was successful in reading your InvisiClues PDF. I was unsuccessful in both macOS and Windows. I was sure it would work in Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows.
I just played with white text on a white background in Pages and exported the file as a .docx (Word 2007 or later) file. It worked exactly as you intended the InvisiClues PDF to work.
That might be a nice third option for those of us who cannot get the PDF to work, but like the idea of selecting the text to reveal the hint. I thought that was a clever idea.
I have the same problem when using Preview on macOS.
I even tried using Adobe’s Acrobat Reader DC on Windows without success.
Could you make a version of the InvisiClues that was a Word document with white text on a white background? That should allow us to select the text to hopefully see the hints as you intended.
What did you use to create the PDF file?
Yes, RESTORE is the command I'm looking for. Thanks. It might be a good idea to put that in the Readme file.
The emulator is Atari800MacX (http://www.atarimac.com). It works on Altirra (Windows 8-bit emulator). I'm assuming the non-standard ATR size is what causes the problem on Atari800MacX. Hopefully, you can put the game on a standard double density (180K) disk as an option. That should eliminate the problem.
It did work on my XEGS using an Sdrive Max (SIO device that uses Micro SD card) to read the ATR file. I haven't gotten far yet, but it didn't crash when I typed "GO NE" like it did in Atari800MacX.
First of all, thanks for supporting so many retro platforms.
I have two questions:
1. How do I load a game? I was able to use the SAVE command to save a game in progress, but I don't know how to load the game again. I admit my Infocom knowledge is at least 20 years out of date.
2. On the Atari 8-bit version, if I try to "GO NE" (Northeast) at the very first screen, I get text that says "End of the beach" and I get an "Internal Error #8033" message. On the Atari ST version, I get "End of the Beach" along with other text and the game doesn't crash.
I saw your thread at AtariAge. It is possible the error occurs because the disk image is not a standard size. Maybe if it was changed to a double-density disk (180K) that might help.
Right now, I am using an emulator for both the 8-bit and the ST. However, I am hoping to copy the 8-bit version to my actual Atari XEGS hardware.
