Yeah, it definitely needs to be easier/have some guidance. You're not alone here (but so it is with a game jam entry)! Thanks for the constructive criticism!
Actually, there are plans for more detection methods that deviate from canon a bit. For example, you'll find items in rooms, have items to mark the room you're in, etc.
In addition the game parameters (cube size, number of boots, etc) will be configurable.
Not yet, but planned! That was an issue during the first couple days - "what if you're too low to reach the exit" - so I added an exit on the bottom of the Cube.
