DEVLOG: Slide Mechanic & New Statges

We are designing new game mechanics and also working on new backgrounds. 

Game Main Page

Surviving in the volcano becomes an increasingly difficult task as you complete the levels, so we decided to teach Jack a new move: the slide.



Using the down arrow plus jump combination, Jack will start to slide, decreasing his collision box and moving a short distance before stopping.
This game mechanic is useful both for passing in otherwise inaccessible passages and for dodging dangers inside narrow tunnels.

But beware, Jack is not invincible during the skill and a badly calculated slip can lead to his death.



We are also working on new game stages, here you can see Jack intent on saving himself as he approaches the top of the volcano.

We made some quick fix to the demo:

v1.0b:

  • General difficulty calibration in all levels.
  • New oxygen refill mechanic (fast as lightning) .
  • Fixed a bug in the online ranking display.
  • Fixed a bug in the map selection menu.
  • Resolved some minor visual bug.

  • Fixed gamepad analog stick bug.

v1.0d:

  • Fixed the negative time score bug.

in this post we will update the development progress of Saving Doc Jack, a fast, hand-crafted, 2d platformer.

WHAT A MISFORTUNE DOC JACK

Jack did it, he finally realized his dream of becoming a researcher, but something sadly went wrong... It seems that this will be his first and last research... Unless... Can you help him get out of trouble? It will be a very challenging journey!



FEATURES:

  • Adrenalinic and precise platformer in pixel art.
  • Dangerous traps to avoid scattered along the paths.
  • Get the collectibles  for a better score.
  • Local and Online records to compare with players all over the world, the game is very suitable for speedrun.

GAMEPLAY:

Go up from the dephts of the volcano, level after level, using fast and precise platformer mechanics and avoiding the dangers along the way such as: lava, fireballs, hot geysers and many more. But be careful not to end the oxygen, which is missing due to the eruption, that must be continually refilled by using the emergency tanks scattered throughout the levels. Also try to recover the collectibles to get a better score, especially the precious research documents.

We do not know which version you played but in the last update we increased the range of the potion to make it more useful.

The game was meant to be challenging, anyway with a gamepad it becomes much easier to finish it.

I am glad to hear that you have reached the third level :)

On the freezing potion you are right, there are some oxygen spot where you cant use them. We will probably make a version with all the things that are missing, including this one.

Beautiful game :)

Controls are responsive, nice music and sounds, the upgrades mechanic encourages you to finish the game in all its parts.

I noticed some little bugs that can be easily fixed:

  • When you fall from a great high, the character go out of the camea view (dont know if it was meant that way).
  • You can wall jump out of the stage.
  • In the settings if you change the window size you cant go back to "medium".
  • "Windowed mode" option work in reverse (i think).

(as you can see I played your game a lot :p)

Regarding difficulty and controls, the game is meant to be challenging and we recommend using a gamepad. With the keyboard you need more time to master the basic mechanics.

Nice game.

The hook mechanic is really hard to master due to imprecise controls. Sometimes the player accelerate (I do not know if it's due to the flow).

Apart from the movements, the rest is ok. I love all the details you put inside the stage like the light that increases the closer you get to the surface, the flow that move your character and the harpoons, all the enemies (maybe too many) especially the one that traps you (he reminded me zelda games).

The graphic is ok.

Music loop is too short, after a while it becomes annoying.

I noticed the CPU only at the end of the game. Maybe zoom out the camera a bit or shrink the stage.

We had little time for finish the game, so texts and menu are missing.

Really challenging game. Nice music too.

Sometimes melee soldier push the golem out of the screen and you can't see what is happening.

Nice mechanic. You can implement various levels with different shapes and music.

As others have said, adding a rotate button will be great.

Game don't freeze, after the death animation you must press a key to restart. Due to lack of time we couldn't implement text on screen or menu that tell you what to do. Sorry for that.

For what concearning Chill potions, they were meant only to stop the lava briefly and give you more time to finish the level.
