I only played like 800 times before getting to this point.

 I almost turned down the diplomat figurehead... who knew he was the key to eternal life? :D

I think it's the "freely revisit" gems that cause the game to hang - like allowing it to revisit squares gives it too many possible paths. If I let it sit, it would eventually finish calculating and execute the move, sometimes 10 minutes later(!) This is on a 2016 laptop though, YMMV!

I tried playing without accepting any of those gems, and it worked perfectly. I got into the trillions without a single freeze.
