I ran into the same problem on Mac OS 10.14, where the 'start new game' freezes.

I also tried downloading the game directly from here, however the file is .exe (windows) and the file title has [win] which leads me to believe the mac version was not added correctly.

First off, love the game and can't wait  for the rest. Found a few bugs while doing my playthrough...

• Mac device: Game sometimes crashes when command + tabbing out of fullscreen mode
• Was able to access Liam in Dicktionary just before meeting him, and his preferences were unlocked
• During first Ghart friendship scene, a white box appeared over his face
• During first twins/barracks scene, Tristan's face was intermittently a white box

Additional UX / Accessibility requests:

• Additional keyboard navigation options, for example back arrow key to re-read last dialogue, or arrow keys to navigate in the world, or escape key to access the player menu
• Highlighting interactive objects on hover - feels like I'm missing so many cute scenes by not knowing what's clickable
