This is really fun! I am having a great time playing this, up to wave 6 currently.

Thank you! You aren't the only one who mentioned wanting backgrounds for text, and since the jam TECHNICALLY isn't over yet... I did some googling, figured out how to do it, and updated the game! Should be much easier to read now. Thanks again for putting the jam together, and double-thanks for playing and offering your thoughts!
I've never used PICO-8 before this Game Jam, and I've never participated in a game jam before this Game Jam. It's something I always wanted to do but never quite had the time and the confidence to follow through with, and for some reason something about the look and functionality of PICO-8 made me think this time it was possible. I had an absolute blast making my submission QUIET HELIX, and it's very cool to see everything else people have come up with using those assets so far. I just wanted to say Thank You to everyone who assisted in putting this together, because it really has introduced a whole new game engine to me that I can see myself using for years to come.
Thanks again Tom (& friends), this has been a blast.

That was my biggest issue with this as well, and something I feel like was improved a good deal in the follow-up title Fisherclicking (https://filthyandfree.itch.io/fisherclicking).
So, after playing for about an hour on the new build, I think the biggest thing it's missing right now is a generic "action" button. Something that can be applied to the spacebar, which is already the main button, or another one like "e," but for simply talking to NPCs and looking at (or searching) desks/shelves/trees/etc. Also more of a penalty for reneging on contract jobs would be good, and (in the long run) some sort of ever-changing commodity market like what was in Fantabulous Wonderment, where I can take these bananas across the star system to the people who worship bananas and make a fortune as the supplier for the banana religion.
Pretty sure this one has been reported already, but issue trying to reload my save file from yesterday here:

But I totally understand. My last error message in my own game was equally infuriating.
You are Argon, a member of the elite American Empirical Rangers. Your ship has crash landed on an unknown, unfamiliar planet, and to make things worse your second-in-command, a woman named Ester, is missing. It's up to you to explore the strange world you now inhabit and learn the fate of your missing companion.
This game is a point and click adventure. You can save your progress at any time and return later. Some inventory items may need to be used in the proper order.
You are encouraged to explore everywhere! Chat with the interesting people on the street, they may be willing to help you along your way!
