I know that this is the ocean and not the cold, but it reminds me of the short story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London. It's the idea that you've already lost once you're in the situation. I love how desperate this game seems and I can't wait to try it!

I wrote my game about a crow for many reasons. Yeah they're common, and they're not the most flamboyant birds, but the ways they interact with the world and with other organisms is endlessly interesting to me.
Also, pigeons! They were one of the first domesticated animals in all of humanity- they were incredibly useful for delivering information far faster than even a person on horseback, and they were integrated into the culture of cities so much that they never left even after we abandoned them.
I'm also incredibly fond of kingfishers and owls and herons. They're all birds with a lot of character and they're rather present birds.
