I just realised it says 8-bit and not the s word, so you can ignore the rest of what I wrote.

I wouldn't be so hard on yourself with the graphics. It actually looks fairly decent. My only complaint would be the tiles, they are too contrasting and bright. Otherwise they're a decent effort.

Favourite game of the Jam so far.

All I see is a few gray squares

Spawn the bullets at the position and rotation of a child of the player that sits in front of the screen.

I think the best improvement for now could be making the movement less floaty/like an ice level
