I was doing pretty well until the point where I couldn't get the boat between Porto and Beaco to transport spices. The transport options only listed fish, wood, and swords.

The game definitely has a lot of personality. :)

The main bug I ran into is that production rate bonuses for upgrades don't survive a save and load. The upgrades are no longer available and the money remains spent but the bonus is missing.

SFML does most of the same things that SDL does but uses a C++-style object-oriented programming interface instead of the C-style function-oriented interface of SDL. You can't go too far wrong with either of them, though.

I just noticed how good a job the animated image on this page does of showing how to play the game.
