This seems to be a universal problem with the MAC version of the game itself, since I have the exact same issue, and I've tried on two different apple devices already
Played it several times. I'm constantly stuck around 110-130 population
It worked fine on my friends windows computer, but I can't open it on my MacBook for some reason.
