You're doing it correctly but it most certainly needs a tutorial.

I'll look into and keep an eye on the sun indicator.

The icons on the left switch to different cameras. The horizon cameras are in a fixed position and the array cameras are attached to the solar array. When one of the array cameras is selected, the camera will move(track the sun) when clicking on the vertical bar.

You're not missing any mechanics when its dark they do exist in the game but the player has no way of interacting with them. I encountered a major setback and was unable to use a large portion of my UI. That part of the UI had most of the documentation and the ability to use other mechanics.
