There is a battle arena that you get moved to. It's sometimes visible in the distance while going through dungeons. In fact, one old bug was that random dungeon generation would sometimes create walls inside the battle arena.

You're looking for One-Armed Bandits out in the field. They're visually distinct.

In an ideal world, instead of a blank string there'd be text along the lines of "You try to pull out the sword, but you're not strong enough."

Pretty sure you need to start over with each new version. You can keep your character's appearance by copying the string at the bottom of the Character menu, though.

I'm playing v4.3 and I noticed that the leg patterns KneeHigh_Base_Color, KneeFluff_Base_Color, ThighHigh_Base_Color, and ThighHighFluff seem to turn the crotch bright white for some reason. Is there any way to fix this?

Try moving closer or further away. I've noticed that the game can be a bit picky about where you need to stand, including for different interactions with the same NPC.

Were you trying to fight the Unusually Large Rat miniboss in the sewer dungeon in turn-based combat? The rat minion in that fight (who likes to cast Intensify) is glitched to have hundreds of turns. (Even if you're absurdly powerful and can survive that long, the fight gets stuck after you kill the minion; the miniboss powers up and then nothing ever happens.) You have to switch to realtime combat for that one fight.

The dungeon directly across from town (through the gate that has to be opened from the other side).

The scaling system becomes practically mandatory eventually.

I personally would've had a slightly easier time early on if the notice board's "old messages" topic had been called "instructions" instead. I just assumed it meant "messages you've already read" or something.

The anvil is in back near the smith. Items have a border that's one of four colors: red, green, blue, and white. Colored items only accept items of the same color, except white can use and be used by anything. Ability Crystals give the most item EXP, followed by filled essences and refined ingots.

I think the bug with the Bunshido not attacking is due to her having an Iatowashi Sheathed and Stool equipped in her hands by default. The Iatowashi Sheathed can't be used without an empty hand. I unequipped the Stool and she used Sheathe Buff (or, uh, "Seathe buff") and Iatojutsu as a follower.
