With this month's theme of "Crab" I decided to write a crab canon!
A crab canon is like a musical palindrome; two voices play the same musical line, one from beginning to end the other from end to beginning.
For example:
Voice one: ABCDEFGA
Voice two: AGFEDCBA
It's the same idea, just played in opposite directions
It's named after crabs' ability and proclivity to walking forwards and backwards.
It's pretty tricky to write and have it both follow the rules and sound good but I'm pleased with the result.
My submission for JAMA Jam December 2023!
The theme was stars and I knew I wanted to write something that represents stars' twinkle and sparkle. Pretty chords arpeggiated on a celesta with strings and winds supporting it. Also very much at the forefront of my mind because I saw a performance of The Nutcracker Friday night and the celesta was gorgeous!
I really like deriving certain elements of the theme and crafting my music around it and this case is no different. Stars, usually, have 5 sides so the music has 5 beats every measure and it uses 5 distinct chords. And for stars that have 6 sides, the actual rhythmic groupings of the arpeggios are in 6.
