They don't work when you're in the map builder itself, only when you go into a game with that map and place them.
A) You can play it for free...B) Developers put time and sometimes money into their games, they deserve to get something out of it.
I remember playing Mindustry a while ago when this was the only version. Although I enjoy the new one more, I'll still love the classic
Graphics aren't the point of the game. Gameplay is what matters most, and Mindustry is a fun game.
