My own interpretation is that switching between the UI and the player doesn't seem to make too much of a difference since you're still controlling the player (indirectly in this case), but it still fits the theme. I totally get your critique, though

I could definitely see an early browser game in this. We were trying to go for a pictochat-ish style, but once we added color it became more paper mario-esque
