Thank you for your feedback! While I probably won't make a sequel, I do agree with your suggestions and will modify the game as I see fit.
You should simply need to set the notches to the correct locations and it would open automatically. I'm not sure why it wasn't working for you, because when I just tested it, it worked fine.
