i've got the exact same problem. mashing the spacebar does nothing. i'm running it in my browser. tried a bunch of things, but i've come to the end and can't continue any further. everything else in the game works fine so far.
This is a nice sideways shooter and quite enjoyable.
It reminds me a lot of "Rearguard" from the TRS-80 Model I.
