getting a Script'Game_Battler'line 285: NoMethodError occurred. undefined method '>' for nil:NilClass

I just got the point of having to go back to the witch after the encounter with the clown(after he makes a split to the right at the fork to merchant town and empire road). Game keeps getting this error before crashing upon 1st attack of any battle.
