What exactly does 'pixelation' do?

Is pixelation purely aesthetic?

Or, does it have a useful effect?

Aesthetic to my knowledge.

It may also assist with reducing the strain on your computer - some users that have lower-end PC's play with high pixelation to ease the game's computational demand. I can't speak from personal experience for whether or not this actually helps, since I never played the game at low pixelation.

This in particular is along the lines of my underlying question.

I had not known whether pixellation added an additional effect on top of what is already generated - in which case I assume that performance could be further strained - or whether pixellation works by omitting details, in which case I hypothesize the game might run smoother.

I still don't know, in fact. However, I think I might just give it a shot and note any differences.
