An Absolute Delight

Can't wait for the full release. I binged this over a couple late nights. All the characters were enjoyable. I haven't played a ton of visual novels, but there were several aspects that stood out. The dialogue was enjoyable to read - in others I have skipped through certain characters or descriptions, but here everything was engaging.

Some VNs have long-winded descriptions and internal dialogue that drags. I've only played one path, but all of the moments I've experienced felt "earned". The buildup and execution of everything gave proper tension and the choices made didn't feel like slight alterations in dialogue - for the route I took, I had several points where I was carefully considering my responses as the decisions felt meaningful and potentially far-reaching.

I've focused primarily on Jayda - she's precious and deserves the best (the artwork for her regular portraits are phenomenal and fitting of her personality). Even so, in other VNs where I'd often be inclined to maximize every moment with a particular character for the "best path", I found the reactivity from other characters enough to warrant me rationing time out to others. I also appreciate how the side characters are given their own moments, and it would be great to see more of what seem to be the "non-romantic" options play a role.

There seemed to be several moments where the promise of others reacting to your changing relationships were apparent, but it would be nice to have more dialogue or observations related to it. Perhaps they're there and my playthrough didn't trigger a ton of moments; it might be that the latter half of the game is expected to have more confrontational reactions My version of Syd has spent an awful lot of time at Jayda's instead of spending time with the other girls- I would expect this would stand out to their friend group considering the apparent state of their relationships at the beginning.

Fantastic job though. Definitely one of those where I can't wait to play the full release, but am also dreading it ending as I find the story and characters so enjoyable.

One more note - I'm sure it's often requested, but I felt there were a couple moments in my playthrough that deserved their own unique imagery separate from the standard view (thinking of one especially related to Jayda and her goals). Every additional image adds a lot to the experience but I know there are complexities with deciding whether the range of emotion from the regular view is preferable over an image that better captures a moment. Even if it lasted for only a couple of lines of dialogue, it can really bring to life a scene.

Hello there! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and kind words! I enjoyed reading what you had to say.

I'm glad to hear the story was so engaging! I wanted to just focus on the dialogue and characters for a story like this, because I think people would much rather hear about what the characters are saying and doing rather than how a certain park bench they may be sitting on feels hahaha. But I think thats just my style of writing! I put in what I like to see in books/games/VNs.

You will find many other fellow Jayda fans, don't worry! I hope you enjoy her content in the full game too, and I'm even happier to hear you enjoyed spending time with the rest of the cast too. I wanted to really convince people to spend time with as many different characters as possible by making each character's story as compelling as possible, and not to just focus on their one favourite.

Also, it is true that a lot of the "reacting to your relationships" is backloaded towards the end of the game but... I think you're right, some indication of this feature earlier on in the demo could really help! I will honestly take this into consideration next time I edit the earlier parts of the game. I think by the end of the second week the characters, especially Maisy, should be saying something if you ignored her and are just spending time with Jayda instead.

And as per the additional note:
I would love to have as many moments as I can covered with special CG artwork - but sadly the budget is stretched as thin as possible, and I want to pay my artists ethically to create as ethical a product as possible and reward their hard work. There are additional CGs in the making, but of course - moments WILL slip through the cracks. I'd love to revisit the idea of adding more art in the future, maybe post-launch if the game is succesful, but I can't make any promises. Thank you for this feedback too though.

Again, thanks so much for commenting and writing about your experience playing LoveSick Darlings! Hearing from players always gives me extra motivation, and your thoughts were enlightening and interesting to read too :)

I hope you have a lovely rest of your day and enjoy the full game when it comes out!
