My Thoughts on "What Did Veronica Dream Of?"

As a fan of surreal RPGmaker games, I found this one pretty interesting! Here's my playthrough for those that want to watch:

I want to emphasize that the game is competently made. The puzzles were clever (though pretty difficult at times, but I'm terrible at puzzles), the visual style is cool, and there is even a bit of variety to the gameplay.

However, my main gripe is the lack of an engaging story. It seems like the intro and ending cutscenes indicate that the main character is simply retelling a weird dream she had to her friends at school, which kind of takes away any mystery from the game (unless I'm a dummy and there is something I'm misunderstanding).

It doesn't necessarily need a deep narrative, but for a RPGmaker game tagged with "horror" and "surreal", I expected something akin to Yume Nikki where there's an overarching theme to everything in the dream and a much darker story to find hidden just beneath the surface.

Overall, I think it's a good prototype, but a little bit of direction in terms of what the game is supposed to be about would make it much more memorable, in my opinion.

Also, as an aside, I did find a compressed folder named "bonus" in the game files. It requires a password to extract it though. I don't know if it's part of the game, but a hint would be nice if possible!

Thanks for your "Thoughts"! I am glad you found the experience enjoyable.

The main character IS retelling a recurring dream she has to her college friends. However. Dreams are not only a reflection of events. They are a way to process (and even resolve) real-life problems. So, by guiding Veronica, you are helping her through whatever she found herself in. Is it some deep, dark, dramatic secret? Probably not. That doesn't mean it's unimportant or 'random'!

Of course, you can think what you want; I am not the Thought Police.

The hint: Is there an object in the game which can give you a string of numbers after writing a  word?

It's an interesting game for sure! Thank you for the video, since I tried playing it myself but could never figure out how to water the flowers. Didn't realize you could collect water from the room with the rain.

It'd be nice if there was more to it, but all the same I really liked the visuals and music. Charming and the perfect degree of surreal. The various ways you can die are interesting in their own right (favorite's the part where you get merked for correctly saying plants convert carbon dioxide to oxygen, lmao). The target that kills you if you walk through is also eerie in the best way. Wish we could see more of this odd little world and its inhabitants.

Not sure if you expect me to say something or are only talking to op, but I will answer anyway.

  1. Thanks!
  2. I have a soft spot for Veronica and am working on some additions/improvements, but... life gets in the way.
  3. Plants breathe oxygen, not carbon dioxide. AND they convert carbon dioxide to oxygen. Nature is amazing.

I don't mind! 2. Happens to the best of us, haha. 3. Ahh, forgot plants also need oxygen to respire. I was caught up in the grade-school wisdom of "plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen". I suppose the greenhouse girl generously provided Veronica a science lesson!
