The core game mechanics are the same for both modes. Sandbox mode is roughly equivalent to starting a game after all of the story mode quests are complete. Of course this causes some inconsistencies when trying to acquire unique characters tied to the story mode's story, but most of those characters are still available through abbreviated means. In sandbox mode, all areas of the map, purchasable spells, unlockable potions, slave brands, and sex jobs are available at the start. The player will start with more money, upgrade points, and mana, and all portals and the farm will be pre-purchased.
