I am not using the demo, I have purchased the software and am using v1.0.3.  The buttons for exporting are grayed out. Is there something I must do before it allows me to export as a .gif or .png file?

Press the render button it should work after doing that

TableKnightGames is right, you have to render the sprite before exporting the spritesheet or .gif file.
