Hi! I'm Novemberisms. I'm currently making a demake of Nintendo's the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This is just done for fun as a fan project. I have no connection to Nintendo whatsoever. I'm only doing this to see if I can distill everything that makes Breath of the Wild into such an amazing game into a small retro top-down version with only 65kB of code space, 512 sprites, and a limited map size.

I hope anyone who finds this enjoys what I make.

So here is the first gif of what I have so far. Here you can see the title screen, and then what follows is me picking up a Fire Rod, shooting at an exploding barrel, which causes everything around me to catch fire. I then panic and make a run for the water to douse myself.

So far so good.

This is obviously just a test environment I set up so I can test out all the item and elemental interactions. The final game will start inside the Shrine of Awakening, just like the real game.

So from this short gif, you can see I already implemented

  • Part of the Chemistry Engine (fire interacting with the surroundings, water dousing fire)
  • Climbing, falling, swimming, and stamina for Link
  • Bokoblins without AI

I made a subreddit here if you want to follow along the development of this demake: https://www.reddit.com/r/zeldabotwdemake/

This looks really cool! I will definitely be checking in now and then to see how it's coming along! How long have you been working on it?
