Problems with MT-32 on real hardware

Good news first. I just played through the latest version on a Tandy. I loved the new areas and everything worked perfectly. Really enjoyed finding all the extra lore that was added.

I thought I'd try it out in EGA as well with the MT-32 but I'm not having so much luck. The game runs fine but I'm not getting more than a couple of hanging notes from the MT-32. I've tried this on a 286, 486 and Pentium II, none of which worked correctly. They are all using MPU-401 emulator cards of various sorts to connect to the MT-32. I've never had any problems with other games so there seems to be an issue of some sort with your MIDI drivers.

Your MIDI cards are all set to port 0x330, right?

Yes, all of them.

Would you be able to record a video of the bug happening so I can see the behavior?

(+1)

Oh! Also, which version of the Aching are you playing?

I'm on 1.07. I've recorded a video on the 286 from my phone. The video is terrible but you should get the idea and I got the MT32 into shot so you could see what is going on. I'm selecting none for digital audio and MT32 obviously. I started up Space Quest 3 after to prove it works otherwise.

Hmmm....I notice you're not getting the * Gorgon 2.01 * message on your MT-32 where as Space Quest III *does* print it's intro messages. Is that an Amstrad? I wouldn't have thought that would be an X factor but I'm curious now. Could also be a timing issue where I'm trying to push too much data to the MT-32 too quickly if the CPU is powerful enough. Let me double check and see if I can find a better way to time the messages.

Would you mind pulling down a test build from the public git? I just updated it. All you need is the GORGON2.EXE file.

That appears to have fixed it. I quickly tried both the 286 and the PII before work and everything works as expected now. Thanks for the quick fix! I'll give it a full playthrough later on.

Thanks for the patience! Looking back it seemed like such an obvious oversight on my part. There's a few bugs with the game still getting ironed out before we push out a proper v1.08 update, but good to know it's working on more real hardware! We hope you enjoy the game!

I played through it all last night. The only issue I ran into was the music not playing after loading a savegame on one occasion. I have no idea how reproducible this is but I was in the room with the scholar with music playing. I saved my game then took the pills to get the secret ending. The same music kept on playing at this point which may or may not be right. I reloaded my save and there was no sound at all. I walked outside, still wasn't hearing anything and decided to reload again at which point the music was playing again.

I think I know what happened there. I'll make sure that fix is in the next patch. Thanks for letting me know!
