I never lost anything by rejecting 200 or 100 gold offerings to mermaid or a witch, did others experince the same thing?
If you reject the witch enough times then eventually the spirits will cry out and you'll lose 1-2 happiness every few nights. I don't think it's worth the two hundred coins though

when I rejected I had to pay 1000 coins later to make the spirits happy again
You don't have to do that, the only downside is that you lose some happiness over time.
